Trains

One of the nicest ways to arrive in Lapland is by sleeper train.  Leaving Helsinki in the evening and traveling up through Finland to arrive at Kolari station (about 30 mins from Äkäslompolo) at around 10am next morning.

The food and drink is good on the train and the beds are comfortable, allowing you to arrive relaxed and ready for winter fun.

You can find out more about this option at VR Trains the Finnish Rail Service

Automobiles

From outside Finland, you probably won't want to drive to Lapland in winter, unless you are traveling for a month or so.

However, if you want to travel while you are here, it is well worth hiring a car.  All cars must have studded winter tyres from November to April and it's good fun driving on quiet snowy roads in winter.

Winter tyres are really good and it's not hard driving on snow, you just need to remember that braking distances are a lot longer.

All the major car hire firms are here, but you might want to try FI Rent or Scania Rentals
