Local FAQ

Is the tap water safe?

Yes! It is some of the purest water in the world, filtered through the ancient fells. Please don’t buy bottled water – just fill up your bottle from the tap.

Where do I buy groceries?

Jounin Kauppa is the heart of the village. It’s a large K-Market that sells everything from fresh reindeer meat to winter clothing. It even has a small pharmacy section, a post office, a bank machine and, of course, an Alko shop.

How do I get from Kittilä Airport?

The airport bus meets every scheduled flight and drops off at several points in the village. If you have a lot of luggage or what to be dropped at the door of your cottage, consider Ylläs Express or a local taxi, but we recommend booking a few days in advance during the peak winter weeks.

Do I need a car?

In Äkäslompolo, almost everything is walkable. Most cottages are within a 15-20 minute walk of the shops. During winter, the ski bus circulates the village regularly. Only rent a car if you plan to visit other villages or deep wilderness spots.

What are the shop opening hours?

Unlike many places in Europe, our supermarket is open late every day (usually until 21:00), even on Sundays.
