Winter in the village of Seven Fells

Äkäslompolo is more than a ski resort; it is a living village surrounded by Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. Whether you are seeking the adrenaline of the slopes or the silence of the ancient fells, here is how to make the most of our winter wonderland.

The Blue Moment (Kaamos)

Between early December and mid-January, the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon in Äkäslompolo. While many expect total darkness, the reality is a phenomenon called Kaamos.

Around midday, when the sun is just below the fells, the landscape is bathed in an ethereal, deep indigo light. The white snow reflects this blue hue, turning the entire village into a scene from a dream. It is the quietest, most peaceful time of year – perfect for those who want to escape the noise of the world.

  • The Best View: Walk down to the edge of Lake Äkäslompolo at 12:00 PM. On a clear day, the southern sky will glow with soft pinks and purples, while the fells behind you turn a vivid, electric blue.
  • Photography Tip: You don’t need a fancy camera, but you do need to keep your phone warm! The Blue Moment is short (often just 15–30 minutes), so be ready to capture it before the indigo fades into the starry night.

Äkki’s Tip: “Don’t be afraid of the ‘dark’ months. This is when the village feels most like a fairy tale. Ask me for the best spots to find a view of the blue fells.

On the Trails (Cross-Country & Snowshoeing)

Cross-country skier gliding downhill

With over 330km of prepared trails, this is the cross-country capital of Finland.

  • For Beginners: The “Warm-up” tracks around the lake are flat and beautiful.
  • For the Fit: The climb to Kotamaja rewards you with the best wilderness views.
  • Where to Gear Up: Visit Sisu Outdoor or Äkäslompolo Sport Shop for expert wax advice and rentals.

Pro Tip: Never walk on the ski tracks! Use the designated “Winter Trails” for snow-shoeing, walking and fat-biking. Skiers travel fast and the tracks are easily damaged.

The Magic of the Night (Aurora Borealis)

While tours are great, you don’t always need them. Simply walk away from the streetlights toward Lake Äkäslompolo. On a clear night, the sky belongs to the lights.

Ask Äkki: What is the Aurora forecast for tonight?

A Private Visit from Santa Claus

The "Big fella" Santa Claus himself

The most authentic way to meet Santa is for him to visit you at your own log cottage. He arrives with bells and stories, creating a memory your family will never forget. For more information, press the big red button 🙂

Husky & Reindeer Safaris

Experience the ancient way of travel. We recommend booking smaller, family-run farms for a more personal connection with the animals and the local herders.

Husky Safaris

Husky Sledding

We highly recommend Husky Ranch and Power Run Adventures. They prioritize the well-being of the dogs and offer soulful high-quality excellent sledding.

Reindeer Farm

Villa Vaamila is a great option. It is a traditional farm where you can learn about the cultural heritage of reindeer husbandry in a calm, non-commercial environment.

Downhill & Snowboarding: The View from the Roof of Lapland

While the cross-country trails wind through the silent forests, the Ylläs Fell offers a different perspective. Standing at the summit, you are at the highest point in the region, with the vast wilderness of the National Park stretching out beneath you like a white ocean.

Whether you are carving down the longest runs in Finland or taking your first turns on the gentle lower slopes, the “Lappish Alpine” experience is one of pure, crisp air and panoramic views that stay with you long after you’ve unbuckled your boots.

    • Where to go: All downhill lessons, equipment hire, and lift passes are managed at the Y1 Ski Centre, conveniently located right on the Äkäslompolo side of the fell.
    • Pro Tip: Keep an eye out for the “Gondola Sauna”—it is exactly what it sounds like, and it’s the only one of its kind in the world!

      The “Pancake” Pilgrimage

Delicious pancakes at Velhon Kota ski cafe in Äkäslompolo

You haven’t truly experienced a Lapland winter until you’ve skied, walked or cycled to a “Latu-kahvila” (trackside café).

Our Top Picks: Velhon Kota. Located in the woods, they serve the most famous pancakes in the region. It is accessible by ski or via the winter walking trail. Navettagalleria is also easy to get to and serves fantastic hot chocolate and delicious cakes.

      Motorized Safaris & Snow Village

If you want to reach the high fells quickly, or fly through the winter wonderland, a snowmobile safari is the way to go. Three safari companies, all found in the centre of the village, are all excellent choices for reliability and safety. They all provide a range of other services and their web-pages are worth browsing.

        Staying Warm (Crucial Advice)

The Arctic cold is beautiful but must be respected. It is best to be prepared and not to rely on standard “winter” fashion from home.

How to Dress Like a Local

        Local Clothes on inexperienced model

The secret to enjoying -20°C is not a thicker coat—it’s the layers. Here is the ‘Three-Layer Rule’ we live by in Äkäslompolo:”

        • The Base Layer (The Moisture-Wicker): 100% Merino wool is your best friend. Avoid cotton at all costs—once it gets damp from sweat, it stays cold!
        • The Mid Layer (The Insulator): A thick fleece or a wool sweater. This traps the heat your body produces.
        • The Shell (The Shield): A windproof and waterproof jacket. In Lapland, the wind can be “sharp,” so a good hood is essential.
        • The Extremities: Warm wool socks (leave room for your toes to move!), mittens (warmer than gloves), and a hat that covers your ears.
